    Barbara Ann Humphrey was born on April 25, 1950 in Marlin, TX and moved with her family to Dallas when she was two years old.

    The cousin of the former Duke Ellington trumpeter Eddie Preston, Humphrey graduated from Lincoln High School in Dallas in 1968 and began her college studies on a scholarship at Texas Southern University in the fall of that year.
