Bruckner, (Joseph) Anton(bAnsfelden, Linz, 1824; dVienna, 1896). Austrian composer and organist. Son of village schoolmaster, showed precocious mus.

    • talent but had no expert teaching until aged 11. Was choirboy at St Florian's monastery, 1837–40, and in 1840 began training in Linz as a schoolmaster, mus. remaining an absorbing sideline. Persisted with org. studies and became a virtuoso of the instr., especially in art of improvisation.
